How To Maintain Your Commercial Flooring Over The Winter Months

As the winter months approach, laminate and wooden flooring will need more care than usual. The winter weather means more chance for dirt and moisture to be brought in, potentially leading to scratches which can trap dirt and make the floor harder to clean.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ensure your flooring is properly maintained over the winter months. Read on to find out the best ways to keep your flooring looking its best.

Keeping outside dirt to a minimum

Before doing anything to the flooring itself, making sure that the correct measures are in place to stop dirt getting in is one of the best steps to take. Providing large doormats at entrances will incentivise people to wipe their shoes before entering, cutting down on the amount of dirt brought in as well as taking care of excess water.

Effective and Scheduled Cleaning

Different steps should be taken to ensure that cleaning of your flooring is effective. A simple sweep or mop on its own is often not enough to maintain flooring over the winter. You should start with a vacuum or sweep up to get rid of loose dirt, stopping this from damaging the floor during further cleaning. You can then move on to mopping the floor with a diluted cleaning product, finishing the  process. To be most effective, the flooring will often need to be cleaned in this way multiple times in one day, especially if it’s an area of heavy traffic. You should also schedule cleaning around the times of most traffic, giving you more space and ease to clean in whilst also getting the floor when it’s had the most use.

Protect against moisture

As well as sweeping and mopping up, another important step to maintenance is protecting the floor with a finish. This will also require maintenance and will eventually need to be recoated, so it’s important to keep on top of maintaining the finish along with the general cleaning of the floor. To further protect against moisture, use a product such as an AutoVac which dries up moisture instead of spreading it around like a mop and bucket often does.
